tell him that in order to get it insured, you need the vin number and it doesn't seem to be where it should be.. ask him to show you it, it's not something out of line, it's your right as a consumer

There should also be a vin.# on the motor.check it out to see if it matches.

Write down the plate number or the VIN number, call the police department and ask them to run it and find out if it's hot. Easy.

Odomoters don't "burn out". Odometers get switched out when people want to lie about the mileage, or when the item is stolen, both of which are illegal of course. Just tell him you want to verify the VIN, and do it in front of him. Don't let him point it out for you either, find it yourself. If he acts shady, then you know it's stolen. Making him "sign something" won't mean squat if you get stopped by the cops while riding a stolen bike.

the tag agency is also a record library.
first check engine serial number and vehicle identification numer(vin)
and the tag agency will tell You, if They has been stolen.
do not pay any money check in the tag agency first.
my believe is that Your Eyes have seen something that Your brain don't respond ,due to lack of previous record in Your Life.
that guy is a crook.

There are after market wheel locks that you can purchase, as well as bike chains with locks. Another possibility is to go to a Yamaha dealership and buy a new ignition with a new key system. You could buy an alarm system for it as well. As far as to see if the bike is what he says that it is, you can take it to your local police department and have them check the VIN numbers. There are several obvious locations, but also some that he may have overlooked. By matching up the different VIN's, you can tell if he replaced anything and exactly what, concerning the VIN. You can also go to a title search place and have them check the VIN out for you, for a small fee.

First, you need to test ride the bike, ride it to the local police department and ask them to see if its stolen. That way you are covered.
