Preparation is everything, especially when taking the economic route, clean it, rub it down after every coat with fine wet and dry, do it in a dust-free environment. Cans will do a good job if you prepare properly first – and use a specific primer that suits both the paint and the surface.

how exactly do you plan on buying the paint if you can’t afford to rent an air compressor?

your best bet is probably a rattle can. I’ve painted stuff with them before, and it’s tedious, but it works if you’re careful. I put a great paint job on a 67 pontiac using a wide pattern nozzle on a rattle can.

It won't work. They are not made to spray a nice smooth coat of paint.
