Additionally, you could use anything that contains hydrogen cholride…even pure hydrochloric acid…to create this reaction. So although Ajax may not work, another brand of cleaner may…just look at the label for the active ingredient.

What you have …
What you have created is aluminum chloride. Mixing hydrogen chloride (the active ingredient in “the works”) with aluminum creates a simple, exothermic reaction that creates AlCl3 and hydrogen gas. That cloud of gas that comes out of the bottle after it blows is highly flammable (try lighting it!). If you shredded the aluminum into more fine particles (like a powder), the reaction would be almost instantaneous. Try a bigger bottle (2 litre) or wrapping in duct tape for a bigger blast.
