I just had a classic car from the 1960s repainted. Looks great, but now the old chrome looks pretty tired in contrast with the new paint. The guys at the bodyshop said I should take some 0000 grade steel wool along with some chrome polish and just go over the chrome with it. Does this work well, any other ideas?
they have the right idea as I use 000 steel wool alone and it works great.
If you go behind it with knob polish it will bring that chrome back.

It will clean it up some if there are like small spots or pits but to really getting it to look sharp it would need to be re chromed.

The steel wool and polish works great for removing water spots and road grime and some oxidation. However pitted chrome or etched chrome will require re chroming to make it better.

NEVER USE STEEL WOOL ON CHROME!!! NEVER!!!… steel wool scratches the chrome plating off thus causing rust. (thats probably the reason it needs to be cleaned up. from previous steel wool use) the best stuff that i know of is made by 3M its a tan rubbing compound. i forget the number, but u can purchase it at any automotive supply.
