Has anyone or know of any motorcycle transmission that I can add to my custom built motorcycle> Currently I have a 23 HP B&S Vtwin vanguard.
With a Comet CVT. I would like to have a 4, 5 or 6 speed transmission with a clutch.
Any Ideas.
Thanks
He man. What you are trying to do is a good idea. Don’t let anybody talk you down. I’m a 51 year old that is doing the same thing, I also ride Harley Davidson and Brit bikes. The Vanguard will probably be a very durable engine requiring less work as long as you keep it up,,,may out-last most bike engines.
One of your biggest problems isn’t finding the tranny as long as you can get it to mount to the frame. What you are going to have problems with will be the link between the two, it will require machining. Damned near any tranny in 4-5 or 6 speed should work. Try looking at Baker, Ultima and if at all possible, use a British tranny. Check e-bay.
You aren’t going to use the CVT are you? An open belt primary at about 1.5 inch will do you. You may have to spend the bucks but I wouldn’t go over 600 bucks.
I can probably help you if you aren’t in a hurry. My help costs nothing. I’ll just be pointing you in a direction. Give me a contact address or drop me a line at glispy1@yahoo.com

that seems a bit of an odd thing to do. are you trying to achieve 150 MPH or something? its rare to see a CVT and a multi ratio gear box together. a high and low gear i could understand but the CVT should give you all the torque manipulation you need. if you have a 40 or 44 series CVT id think your good to go for say up to 50 MPH or more as long as you are willing to gear it up a bit. either way its unlikely that you will find much in the way of small light gearboxs that are oriented in the way you want. i recently found a very small side loader box from an old car that was the smallest ive seen with heavy gears/bearings but it still weighed about 40 lbs or so and was set up like for a car. i hope you find what you want but ive never been able to find a divorced gear box like what you want. of course the easy way to get that would be to just buy a wrecked bike with a good engine/trany as a unit to use.
edit: just thought id say after reading DAVE’s post, yes the vanguard is a nice engine. but FYI it is limited in the max RPM it can achieve with the stock valve train. also the ratio of valve area to piston area is a bit small. it requires very good maintenance and good oil capable of fighting attrition in the lifters( a high ZDDP oil is best). the carberation is often annoying too. ive seen people build bikes with engines like that useing CVTs and have good results fun wise. hard for me to imagine it outlasting a motor cycle engine though.
