that transmission that you mean is a mechanical transmission that is not used by a scooter. The pully sizes in a variator are constant they are not infinite and the only real thing about the pullys is the weight that is important and regulates the speed of opening the variator. The constant velocity transmission is a transmission that gives the engine a constant rpm so it jumps the low rpm-s to ensure the power ratio of the engine. but the pulleys in a variator have to vary though as far as the width of the interior goes, so the belt can ride high or low just like if you had a tall gear or small gear.

I thought the engine rpms stays the same and the gear ratios is is constantly varying, to allow a higher speed output to occur and peak engine torque.

I guess it is similar to a constantly varying transmission but not quite =(

the diference between a constant velocity transmission and a constantly Variable transmission is the belt. the belt in a constant velocity transmission alows streching and the belt in the variable belt is not strechy. The variable transmissoin is build in smaller size engines because they have not so much power and the belt streches a bit to alow higher rpms when you go up a hill or need more power at the start. the other system is build in in larger engine sizes (400cc+)
