Here’s a short video of a neat diesel motorcycle I saw at the Barber Vintage motorcycle show. It’s built from a Yanmar 10hp diesel coupled to a variable displacement pump. Then out to hydraulic motors to turn the wheels. Looks are deceiving. There’s a lot of aluminum parts to the bike. The bike only tips the scales at 300lbs. The bike can be ran in 2WD or single rear wheel drive. Speeds are about 25mph in 2wd, and 55-60mph in single wheel drive. Fuel estimates are around 100mpg! This is due to the highly efficiency of a hydraulic setup. This setup nets a 93% efficiency rating. The bikes suspension is a air shock setup. Increasing the pressure causes the bike to gain ground clearance. Also shortening the wheelbase for better handling manners. The bike was designed by Andy Wendt and built by Chris Self, Owner of Miracle Machine Works. 334-872-0121

Interesting project. I don’t think that it is as light as my old Rokon Trailbreaker.

Hey, Nice job. Im interested in making a vehicle myself, I was wondering how much the variable displacement pump cost you? What displacement is it?
Less mass, less …
Less mass, less friction since hyd fluid is a lubricant (you’re pushing fluid instead of sliding metal to metal), You also get an precise torque multiplication with the variable vane setup.

I dont pretend to be an expert but that sounds hard to believe, haw can pumping fluid through pipes and driving pump/motor use less energy than turning gears?
I take ur word for it as I am not in a position to prove u wrong, but that sounds odd!?
93% efficiency is …
93% efficiency is leaps and bounds better than most drive systems. Actually this setup generates very little heat. The pump is a variable vane pump allowing for a precise reduction without generating heat.
Hydraulic drive has …
Hydraulic drive has a lot of frictional and heat losses, thats why generally its ony used on diggers etc, wierd bike.
